VMware Automation Engineer

This role will specifically focus on VMware vRa and vRo technologies and how they work with other Automation / Cloud Platforms

The Automation Engineer possesses extensive experience designing, managing, and configuring large-scale Enterprise-class Data Center infrastructure and is considered a subject matter expert. Develops high-level designs to meet the business/IT needs of enterprise clients. Interacts within multiple levels of a client account(s) and demonstrates strong technical ability, thought leadership, and commitment to the client. Focus on development and delivery of value added integration and consultative services in the area of Enterprise solutions, designing, deploying and integrating various hardware and software product sets.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Maintain technical credibility within the data center industry and the field through demonstration of thought leadership
  • Accurately discover and document client's current state and provide gap analysis, road maps, and other recommendations based on findings
  • Identify business requirements, objectives, and goals
  • Advise clients on best practices, frameworks, and pricing models for current and upcoming technologies
  • Create detailed design and plan documentation for large deployments. Designs may include transformational IT initiatives such as data centers of the future, virtualization, cloud, infrastructure-as-a-service, IT-as-a-service, storage, networking, business continuity, and other solutions
  • Advance, endorse, and follow professional service delivery frameworks
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to diagnose and troubleshoot environments while coordinating with clients, vendors, project managers, and other resources
  • Maintain relationships with vendor contacts and clients
  • Must maintain a broad understanding of most data center technologies and how it relates to each project
  • On occasion, attend technical presales meetings and presentations
  • Provide presentations of architectural and functional designs to the client
  • Provide Enterprise Network Design, Implementation and Integration expertise
  • Assist with and develop Statements of Work and project plans based on the client’s requirements and proof of concept to include prioritization and cost assessment
  • Travel is required, sometimes on short notice. Travel frequency and length varies by project

An ideal candidate for this role is someone with:

  • Strong operations experience focused on automated deployments of the data center hardware and software
  • Key areas of expertise for this role are modern scripting languages (Python, Ruby, Perl, Powershell, etc.), software stacks
  • Configuration management tools (Puppet, Chef, etc.), and OS installation technologies (PXE, Kickstart, etc.)
  • Expertise using VMware Orchestrator (vRo) & HP Operations Orchestrator (HPOO)
  • Experience with business requirements, technical analysis and design, coding, and testing
  • Experience with developing reports, workflows and metrics within software environment
  • Knowledge of categorizing and prioritizing analysis and mapping workload for planning and forecasting
  • Knowledge of integration points and the order in which these must be executed
  • Implementation of customizations within software environment
  • Experience in understanding customers' business requirements
