In healthcare, technology is never a side project. Every platform decision carries weight because each one supports the larger system delivering critical patient care. A large Midwestern healthcare system understood this well, which is why it set out to adopt a public cloud platform that could increase its agility and improve application delivery. This transition would let the client deliver telehealth and other services for its patients and care teams, while still prioritizing security and regulatory requirements. 

The Intervention 

For healthcare, the tricky part is striking just the right balance between innovation and compliance.

Every advancement in healthcare technology means another way to improve essential care. This engagement aligned with two areas of AHEAD’s expertise. 

• Secure & Resilient Architectures: Designing a cloud security program to support public cloud adoption and meet HIPAA and other regulatory concerns. 
• Platform & Workload Modernization: Creating the operating discipline to support agile public cloud and cloud-native services. 

The work unfolded across three phases: 

Advise 

AHEAD met with the client to better understand its cloud ambition and security realities. Technology goals connected directly to the controls, expectations, and operating discipline needed to support them.

Build 

AHEAD and the client then developed the cloud security program itself. This was where AHEAD translated cloud-native services into the practical needs of healthcare environments.

With the new program, the client can keep using the public cloud as a platform for innovation. Each new service, workload, and improvement can be evaluated against the same questions: What will create value? What will keep the larger environment secure?
