Onity Group is a financial services company specializing in mortgage servicing and origination. Since 1988, it has served a customer base of homeowners, business clients, and investors.
As the company was preparing to exit a legacy platform, it saw an opportunity to rethink its IT approach. Onity wasn’t looking for a shiny new version of the same old environment. Instead, it wanted a cost-effective operating model that would improve flexibility and lay the groundwork for future transformation.
Cracks in the Foundation
Rising costs, growing security concerns, and a fixed-node model were getting harder to work around.
Cost and Complexity. The legacy platform came with unnecessary overhead. Onity hoped to shift its infrastructure toward a consumption-based model that would match actual usage.
Operating Agility. Onity also wanted infrastructure that could scale dynamically. Simplifying operations would free up engineering teams to spend less time on maintenance and more time supporting new business functions.

Building More Than a New Address
This wasn’t just a migration in the narrow, technical sense. It was a broader IT transformation effort to help the company streamline operations and improve performance. So naturally, it required partners that could do more than just technical execution.

Phase 1 – Advise
AHEAD put guardrails around a high-stakes migration from the very beginning, with only two migration weekends per month.

Phase 2 – Build
AHEAD and AWS rebuilt Onity’s environment as a multi-account AWS architecture, grounded in AWS Landing Zone principles, and aligned with the AWS Well-Architected Framework.

Phase 3 – Run
The new model significantly improved cost transparency and simplified management. Its stable cloud foundation could support day-two operations and ongoing modernization efforts.
How It Kept Delivering: Instead of a rigid, legacy environment, Onity now had an adaptable model that could keep pace with its business priorities.
Same Business, Stronger Bones
Working with AHEAD and AWS, Onity migrated 700+ servers to a modern AWS-native environment in record time and with zero rollbacks.
More Room in the Budget. By eliminating legacy platform licensing and infrastructure overhead, Onity could better allocate resources and align spending to real demand.
Steady Gains Over Time. The move to a consumption-based model also empowered the business case for incremental application modernization. Onity no longer had to wait each time for a large transformation project. It could now selectively rebuild and shift applications and adopt additional native cloud services where they made sense.
