The starting point is visibility. Leaders who map how AI is already in use (e.g., what models are running, what data they touch, and who has access) gain the foundation for meaningful control. From there, guardrails can be introduced that guide rather than restrict. Identity-aware access, monitoring of sensitive data flows, and structured review of AI-generated code enable teams to innovate with confidence as opposed to hesitation.

Regulation is Rising

What sets this wave apart is the speed with which it is drawing regulatory and board-level scrutiny. The EU AI Act is already reshaping obligations for global enterprises, the SEC is pressing for transparency around AI-related risks, and frameworks from organizations such as NIST are rapidly gaining traction as de facto standards.

Boards, recognizing the strategic weight of AI, increasingly view it as a matter of governance and accountability rather than a purely technical issue. Enterprises that wait to fold AI into their governance structures will be forced to react under pressure, while those that act early by embedding oversight into policies, aligning to evolving regulation, and educating executives will move faster with fewer surprises.

A Practical Path Forward

Building a comprehensive AI security program is not an overnight effort, and progress comes from steady, incremental steps:

  • Start by naming a single executive owner for AI risk with decision rights across security, data, legal, and product.
  • Publish a simple RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed) and hold a monthly checkpoint to keep work moving.
  • Stand up a secure, logged ‘green path’ within 30 days that provides approved tools, scoped data connectors, and starter prompts. From there, track adoption, exceptions, and time to approve to prove speed while reducing shadow use.
  • Make testing continuous by running (at least) quarterly red-team and jailbreak checks before major model or prompt changes, supported by a small regression suite to prevent drift from reaching production.
  • Prioritize high-risk data first by applying minimization, masking, and access controls to the top five sensitive sources, expanding in sprints as you learn and measuring reduction in sensitive exposure as a leading indicator.
  • Finally, operationalize controls as part of delivery by assigning clear owners, defining required evidence, and automating logs of prompts, outputs, model versions, and approvals so investigations and audits are fast and defensible—allowing innovation to ship with confidence.

Final Thoughts

AI is neither inherently safe nor inherently unsafe. It is a capability whose value depends on the structures built around it.
